What you'll do

There's no disagreement that resilience is a good thing. We also know that too much of a good thing can be bad for us. For decades, women, especially racialized women, have been encouraged to be resilient and strong in the face of adversity and systemic barriers that make navigating their careers challenging. Though resilience has allowed women to overcome hardships, it has also led to them not using their voices in the moments that matter most and even brushing life and career-altering problems aside. 

In this empowering 60-minute seminar, we will explore the hidden meaning of resilience in the context of women's equity issues, examine why it's time that we are more critical of the resiliency narrative and how we can reframe the role of resilience in the career experiences of women so that resilience is no longer an act of acceptance, but rather an act of resistance against inequity.  

Learning Outcomes
  • Understand the unintended consequences of the resiliency narrative on women's personal and professional lives.
  • Identify the differences between forms of resilience that are helpful and ones that are harmful.
  • Gain a new way to position resilience as a skill in navigating equity issues and supporting meaningful change in the career experience of women.
