What I Learned at 13: An IWD Workshop [In-Person, Toronto)

To celebrate women is to celebrate their stories. This workshop will create a safe, thoughtful space to reflect on our personal stories and what we learned or were taught about what it means to be a woman at pivotal ages throughout our lives (e.g., 6, 13, 21, 30, etc.). Life always makes the best creative inspiration so we will use our reflections to create poetry that honours these stories and the lessons we've learned along the way. This workshop is a celebration of creative expression and play and does not require any previous writing experience to enjoy.

What you'll do

The workshop runs 90 minutes, and follows this suggested flow:
 
  • 10 Minutes: Landing & Introductions 
  • 10 Minutes: Grounding Exercise 
  • 20 Minutes: Writing & Reflection (based on prompts)
  • 15 Minutes: Group Reflection & Facilitated Discussion 
  • 10 Minutes: Accessible Poetry Tools & Resources (including a mini-exercise to ease group into creative play)
  • 15 Minutes: Writing Time 
  • 10 Minutes: Closing Circle & Sharing

 Adaptation Notes:
Theme: This workshop is based around the prompt, "What I Learned at 13", but can be adapted to align with your organization's themes or inclusion goals. This workshop has also be adapted to focus on the experiences of women with intersectional identities.

Length: Recommend allowing more time for larger group sizes (30+) to encourage discussion during group reflection. Past participants cite personal sharing and discussion time as deeply impactful, and can go a long way towards building a culture of inclusion.
